	REQUEST FOR DOCUMENTS & INFORMATION - If anyone has details or photocopies of any Pentrich related wills or probate records, which are not listed below, then we’d be delighted to receive details about the document; we’d be even more thrilled if you’re able to send us a copy of the document. We’d be happy to accept either typed transcriptions or scanned images of the original document, both of which can be sent to us by email ...or photocopies & transcriptions, can be sent to us by post, please do not send the original document though, as we wouldn’t want to be respoinsible for any items lost in transit. The wills we have collected so far, have greatly helped us with our on-going research into the village & they’ve provided a wealth of information regarding former residents of the village.

We do have photocopies another 16 wills & probate records but they have not yet been transcribed, so at present they are not available to download... therefore DOCUMENTS CURRENTLY UNAVAILBLE TO DOWNLOAD, ARE GIVEN IN BOLD PURPLE TEXT. ... But if you are interested in any of the names & documents GIVEN IN PURPLE TEXT please ask if a transcription can be made available online; remember to provide us with full details of the person & the document you are interested in.


	The PHS currently owns photocopies or transcriptions of 53 wills & probate records, all related to Pentrich (or the surrounding area). We have acquired many photocopies oursleves but in some cases we’ve been genourously donated photocopies or transcriptions.

	Derbyshire Wills & Probate - Obtaining documents dated between 1858 & 1928 Michael Spencer’s huge ’Database of Derbyshire Wills, Probate & Inventories’ dated from 1858 to 1928 is freely available online via John Palmer’s Wirksworth site.

Derbyshire Record Office hold indexed registers of Derbyshire wills & administrations from 1858 to 1928, all of which can be found inside the search room of Derbyshire Records Office (DRO) at Matlock. They are indexed in to ‘Calendars’ which are arranged annually & then alphabetically by surname; this means the registers can be easily consulted & photocopied; copies of wills can be supplied for a fee if you are unable to get to Matlock yourself. However some wills & administration records cannot be photocopied; therefore handwritten transcriptions have to be made, which will take longer & therefore cost more.

If you’re unable to get to Matlock yourself, you could pay the standard fee which is payable in advance and per half hour search time ... as staff can undertake research which can be done using any of the manuscript, microfilm and printed sources held in the DRO.

Derbyshire Wills & Probate - Obtaining documents dated before 1858 Lichfield Joint Records Office hold the majority of Pre-1858 wills & administrations for Derbyshire (& other Midland counties); this is due to the fact that much of Derbyshire was under the jurisdiction of Lichfield Diocese. The wills are referenced, in ‘Calendars’ and arranged annually & alphabetically by surname; which allows registers to be consulted and photocopies can be supplied for a standard research fee & photocopying costs.

	However if you cannot get to Lichfield JRO yourself, you do need to fill in a couple of application forms to request research & obtain photocopies, and payment is in advance. The forms should be available (in .pdf format) on their site:

These digitalized versions of the original documents can be ordered and instantly downloaded direct to your own computer (downloads require Adobe Acrobat Reader software - see www.adobe.com ) ... There is a small charge, if yoou wish to download any of the available documents. This is payable online & by credit card ... Currently prices seem to be very reasonable and they generally seem to be charging £3-50 per download/document. Go to their site & do a place or surname search, it is free to search their site and even if you do not wish to purchase the documents, the search alone provides worthwhile information for genealogists - such as dates & locations etc.. ... a location search will list matching documents available for the specified place ... but don’t forget that earlier Pentrich documents may be listed under the spelling ‘Pentridge’.

		The JULIAN & GREGORIAN CALENDAR CHANGEOVER

	1752 is a year to remember!


	In 1752 two changes were made to the English Calendar; firstly we changed the Julian calendar to the more accurate Gregorian calendar (which we still use today). The second change was when the year began ... as the Julian Calendar began on March 25th (meaning March 25th was the first day of the year). When we changed over to the Gregorian calendar, our years thereafter began on January 1st; thus making January, February & March the first three months of the year; instead of being the last.


	However changeover between the JULIAN & GREGORIAN calendars will provide problems for the genalogist who is unaware that the calander changed over in 1752. Ttherefore care has to be taken for documents dated between January 1st & March 24th when working with documents dated before 1752 ... for example, if we had a will dated January 26th 1650. The original document would give 1650 as the date but because it was written whilst the Julian Calendar was used, it gives and inaccurate date if we count back from today’s perspective & we would therefore say the will was actually dated 1651... because, prior to 1752 the months January, February & most of March were located the end of each year, whereas January 1st is now the start of each year, as we still use the Gregoriann calendar today. There is a standard way to record any dates or documents that were written between Jan 1st & March 24th, of any year prior to 1752. The correct procedure is to incorporate both year dates; giving the old Julian year first & the new Gregorian year second ... so the date would be recorded as = January 26th 1650/1

		Having said all this, many of the pre 1752 wills that we’ve come accross have only provided one date - so we are unsure whether the single date refers to the Julian date or a Gregorian date as transcribers of indexes may have already made changes to make the date compatible with today’s Gregorian Calendar ... therefore, of a will we have listed cannot be found, we’d suggest that you try looking at the year either side of the provided date ... but remember it only affects dates between Jan 1st & March 24th, and dates prior to 1752.
