The Letter reads:

PENTRICH VICARAGE,

DERBY

16th December 1910.

My dear Linda,

I have had your letter

of the 11th ultimo on my

study table for some time &

I was wondering if I had written

to you since I received it. If

I havnt then I will try & do so

now.   I read with much

interest your account of the

New England Sanitarium

& medical institution, & the good

work it is doing & that you

are

undergoing a training for

missionary work.

It must be delightful

to be situated in a lovely park

and to be able to walk about

in it from time to time. It

must be good for your health.

That must be a wonderful

reservoir to supply a town

of 100,000 people with good

water. We have no such

thing here, but we have excellent

water that comes many miles

to our village & neighbourhood

in pipes from a spring

of good waters in the far distance.

I notice you have become

a member of the Adventists; that

no doubt refers to the coming of

our Lord Jesus Christ in power

& glory to restore this sin stained

world to its original state of perfection

& Paradise & to reign over it.

You keep the 7th day I

notice which we call the Christian

Sabbath, that is Sunday, when

all work ceasing ceases, except

what is absolutely necessary to be

(*ceasing is crossed out*)

done -  only the Grace of God

can affect this. May we all

possess it!

I am glad to hear that you

are looking forward to visiting

Old England in the year 1913,

it is a long time to wait &

I can hardly expect to be in

the land of the living very much

longer at my advanced age of

84,  but if I shall never see

you, I look at your photograph

very often & kiss it, & O I’d be glad

if you c’d send me a better one

(*c’d means could*)

this one is so small, but clear & you

have a little watch on your right

breast, in looking at it with a microscope

it appears to be about 20 minutes past

10.

I saw you wrote your letter

in bed, as you were suffering

an attack of Rheumatism,

your writing doesn’t look as

if you had any difficulty, it

is so well & clearly written.

I hope you soon recovered

from it & are now quite well

again.

We are now exposed to a

very unpleasant Winter of

cold & much rain at the present

time & longing for a change,

to some fine sunny weather.

We have had however a

very good Summer - & plenty

of fruit; apples & pears, also

carrots & gooseberries, but

especially strawberries, &

had a plateful on the tea

table for weeks, of that

excellent fruit.  Not

to speak of vegetables such

as potatoes, cabbages, carrots

& turnips, leeks & onions, parsnips,

peas & beans, radishes &c &c  all

of which our kitchen garden produces

abundantly.

I think I must now close

my scribbling epistle, which

please excuse & with kindest

regards to your Mother & brother

believe me my dear Linda

Your affectionate Uncle

W.J. Ledward
