A list of our favourite genealogy & history links; including some valuable research tools for locating friends and ancestors .... plus some very useful free software!

We should mention however, that some of these utilities may not be suitable for every type of operating system ... so please make sure you read all the available information given on each web site, before installing any of the software or utilities we’ve mentioned.

Unfortunately the society is unable to offer research or help to individuals researching their family tree. However many of these resources should help you locate friends, family or ancestors.

TraceSmart.co.uk - Advanced people & address search which includes searching the 2004 & 2005 Electoral Roll Search. This is a fee based service, but worthwhile if you’ve lost contact with living relatives.

Ancestry.co.uk - Have all census records online, from 1841 to 1901. Some of the CENSUS INDEXES ARE FREELY SEARCHABLE; full access to census is only for members who’ve paid for time limited access or annual membership.

FamilySearch.org  offer the entire transcribed 1881 British Census, which is - FREE ACCESS

1901 Census Online via National Archives - CENSUS INDEX IS FREELY SEARCHABLE but full census entries can be paid for online once you’ve set up an account & added credit to it.

Ancestry.co.uk - Have a huge database of accessible records for the UK. Including census for 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901 and some parish records & BMD indexes. The site has limited free access; majority of their databases are only for people who’ve subscribed to membership.

Free BMD index 1837-1983 - FREE REGISTRATION

(or) you can register to view their Complete FreeBMD index in images (England & Wales) but you will also be required to download their viewer software.

The National Archives covers England & UK; formed April 2003 by joining the Public Record Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC). The archives collection is one of the largest in the world covers from 11th century to the present day & FREELY SEARCHABLE

‘Documents Online’ which is part of the National Archives ... Freely search the catalogue of digitalized images available to download; each downloadable document includes a scanned image of an old document, such as wills, probate & admins.; Death Duty records, Domesday Book; WW1 Campaign medals & WWII Seaman’s medals. Each document costs £3-50; you’ll require‘Adobe Acrobat Reader’ to view files

Family Records Centre (FRC)

Family Records Centre (FRC) - The FRC provides access to some of the most important sources for family history research in England and Wales, including BMD certificates from 1837 & census returns from 1841 to 1901. The site provides useful information about the FRC, so you know what to expect before you go there.

Access to Archive - The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.
