1817 Depositions - Regarding Pentrich Revolution

The following names are recorded in the 1817 depositions regarding the Pentrich Revolution. William WAINE of Nottingham

G. Burrows by desire of Mr. Smith wrote a note to him on Sunday June 8^th to introduce Ned Moore who was sent over from Ripley instead of William Smith going himself, he being Lame. [G. Burrows]

Gave out that if the Derbyshire men were not ready by the time (June 9^th) he would give himself no further trouble about it as he had brought over the foot soldiers who would lay down their arms the moment they saw a force coming from the country. [G. Burrows]

Isaac WALKER of South Wingfield Park: Farmer

A gun and pistol were demanded at his house by the insurgents, which were given up to them. [H.Hole] [Isaac Ludlam Jnr.] Robt. Turner] [W. Jennings]

John WALKER of South Wingfield: FWK

About 9 o’clock on Monday night June 9^th he called with Samuel Ludlam upon Thomas Turner of South Wingfield (a prisoner) to go with the party from Wingfield. [J. Turner]

Was at the murder at Hepworth’s.  [J. Turner]

Was at Pentrich Lane End after the murder and had a pike. [James Hill]

Was at Mr. Elijah Hall’s of South Wingfield Park. [E. Hall]

William WALKER of South Wingfield: FWK

Was at the murder at Mr Hepworths. [J. Turner]

Was at Elijah Halls of South Wingfield park. [E. Hall]

Charles WALTERS

Was with the mob at Pentrich and carried bullets on his shoulder packed in a stocking leg. [W.Shipman] [J. Spencer]

Enoch WALTERS of Pentrich

Was with the mob at Mr Samuel Fletcher’s of Pentrich. [W. Shipman]

Jeremiah WALTERS of Pentrich

Was with the mob at Pentrich. [W. Shipman]

Job WALTERS of Pentrich

Secretary to the Pentrich Hampden Club. [A. Booth] [James Booth]

Called a meeting at Thomas Bacon’s in consequence of a letter he had received from Bacon in London. [A. Booth] [James Booth]

IMPORTANT NOTE: Regarding Nathaniel Walters entry below; one word has proved difficult to decipher (see image on left side) ... & I’ve used <<?>> to indicate where this word was used within the original document,  please contact me if you know what this word says. One suggestion has been that it may be ‘Quy’; being an abbreviation for ‘Quarry’.

Was at the 5^th meeting at Asherfield Barn. [A. Booth]

Were with the mob. [W. Booth]

Samuel was at Codnor & carried a pike. [C. Walters] [I. Lomas]

Tristram WALTERS

Was among the insurgents at Codnor and carried a gun. [C.Walters]

Carried a large Bludgeon with 3 or 4 hoops of lead around it  but Thomas Hardy believes he had been impressed. [Thomas Hardy]

Was forced at the same time as Francis, by William Waters. [Thomas Hardy]

John WATERS of Pentrich: Collier

Was with the mob. [W. Booth]

Was at Hartshay about 3 o’clock on Tuesday morning June 10^th with a gun. [Roger Wragg] [Chas Walters] [John Lomas] [John Bonsall]

Was at Pentrich between 3 & 4 o’clock with a party who forced John Spencer’s door open and had a gun. [John Spencer]

Passed by Ripley for Codnor & Nottingham about 4 o’clock on Tuesday morning. [W. Young] [Joseph Thorpe]

Joel WATERS of Pentrich: Collier

Was with the mob. [W. Booth] [Roger Wragg]

Was at John Spencer’s of Pentrich Engine, between 3 & 4 o’clock on Tuesday morning when the mob forced Spencer’s door and checks into the house and compelled him to join them. [John Spencer]

Passed by Ripley for Codnor & Nottingham about 4 o’clock. [W. Young] [John Lomas] [John Bonsall]

William WATERS of Pentrich: Collier

Was with the mob. [Wm. Booth]

Was at john Spencers in Pentrich between 3 and 4 on Tuesday morning with a gun. [J. Spencer]

Was at Butterley armed with a gun & others threatened to blow Thomas Hardy’s brains out if he did not join them, & he was compelled to march with them through Codnor and as far as Kimberley where he made his escape. [Thomas Hardy]

At Greenwich he broke open a door of a house occupied by one Cresswell, with the But end of his gun and took Thomas Francis, a blacksmith who lodged there by force with the party. [Thomas Hardy]
